  • More than 130 new listings for 2012, more than twice as many new publishing opportunities as any other resource.
  • Appleseed Books is the new imprint of Abrams Books for Young Readers and will concentrate on books for infants to age five that are both commercial and have the strong artistic qualities for which Abrams Books is known.
  • Fire is the new YA line of steadily expanding Sourcebooks, which publishes more than 300 books a year.  Fire is looking for anything “fresh for young adults.”
  • Storey Publishing is returning to the children’s field after ten years away.  They are looking for puzzle and game books, pull-out poster nonfiction, nature exploration guides, and how-to books—all related to nature, animals, and country living.
  • Harlequin Teen is looking for fresh and authentic fiction with extraordinary characters and stories.  Most of its titles include a romantic element, of course.
  • McSweeney’s McMullens has morphed into a small press and will do a new line of ten picture books a year.  “The only rule is that the book needs to be compelling,” says art director and editor Brian McMullen.
  • Shofar Books is the new imprint of educational publisher Marshall Cavendish.  It will specialize in picture books for Jewish children.
  • Rosen Publishing is growing its lines and reconfiguring.  You should check out all its imprints for new opportunities: Britannica Educational, Editorial Buenas Letras, PowerKids Press, Rosen Central, Rosen Young Adult, and Windmill Books.
  • Nosy Crow is a U.K. imprint that has just arrived in America to publish books and computer/iPad/etc. apps for children from infancy to age 14.  They want high-quality, commercial fiction and nonfiction—“that means great illustration, great design, great audio, great video, great animation, and really great writing.  We go out of our way to find these things from new and established talents.”

Whats in, whats out

 

  • HarperVoyager is the new, consolidated science fiction and fantasy imprint at HarperCollins.  HC closed YA sci-fi imprint Eos and several others.
  • Starscape is looking for middle-grade fiction.  Its fellow imprint Tor Teen wants YA fiction and fantasy, thrillers, and mysteries.  They have an open submissions policy and review thousands of manuscripts each year.
  • Balzer & Bray, the two-year-old boutique imprint of HarperCollins, is looking for fresh new voices, especially in fiction.
  • Jakes Country is a new magazine that replaces Jakes and Xtreme Jakes, with a full redesign and redirection.  All material should be tailored to youthful outdoorsmen.
  • After a period of accepting only from teenage authors, Editor Deborah Vetter reports “Cicada is now open to submissions from both adults and teens.  We also have two websites (one for adults, one for teens) and have adjusted word lengths and payments to reflect our new format.”
  • Highlights for Children now focuses on ages 6 to 12, and leaves material for ages 2 to 6 for Highlights High Five.
  • Ladybug is looking for multicultural stories to 400 words.
  • Brass magazine wants to make money matters interesting, simple, and relevant for young adults.  It prefers to work with freelancers ages 16 to 29.
  • Youth Runner encourages writers to submit articles on cross country, track and field, and health and fitness.
  • The Friend, for ages 3 to 12, is focusing on true stories for younger readers.  Wanted themes include kindness, service, family, life, and Christian living.
  • Piedmont Parent is currently looking for articles on frugal living, food, and birthday parties.
  • The new digital magazine Bamboo is designed for parents raising eco-friendly kids. Its topics range from creative play to yoga for kids and celebrating the summer solstice.
